A Mouse-take
For some reason beyond me, do-gooder groups have a nice warm-fuzzy idea and think it should become law. Their ideas are almost always laudable but their methods ignore the limits of practicability.
I think Richard Dawkin's is inspired. His atheism doesn't, like some others, lead to humanism — instead he highlights the very small difference between one species and another. Abuse of animals is no different, in most ways, from abuse of human beings.
So when the Animal Party of the Netherlands bans mouse poison, you can see their point but at the same time must utter an "Oh my God!" exclamation.
